Phlebotomy technicians perform blood and other clinical specimen collections from patients through venipuncture, syringe and micro-collection techniques.

A Phlebotomy Technician's responsibilities include drawing blood and collecting other specimens, preparing and processing specimens for laboratory testing and maintaining medical instruments such as needles, test tubes, blood vials and centrifuges.

Job opportunities for a phlebotomy technician include working in hospitals, clinics, and laboratories, or specializing as a travel phlebotomist or donor center technician.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations.

About 18,400 openings for phlebotomists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

Students will learn how to draw blood, put patients at ease during procedures and process specimens for testing—all taught by instructors with years of experience in the field.

Students will also take classes that cover how to verify a patient’s identity to ensure proper specimen labeling, andcorrectly label drawn blood for testing/processing.
